Character Info

◎ Character's Name: Miyako Hotsuin
◎ Character's Canon: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
◎ Character's Age: 17
◎ Canon Point: Late Friday evening, before the final decision on what to do once they defeat Canopus.
◎ Background/History: Game Wiki Page | Character Wiki Page
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense?
Hacker, no. She knows enough about the engineering aspects and the programming needed to repair advanced electronics (Preferably electronics imbued with magic), but hacking around security issues is not a skill she possesses. As for a sixth sense, she can sense the presence of supernatural entities, and has high spiritual and magical power.

◎ Personality:
Upon meeting Miyako Hotsuin for the first time, people will describe her as distant, polite, and professional. Indeed, it may be surprising to most to find a seventeen year old not only acting as the head of a prestigious family, but also as the chief of an entire government organization—and a secret one, at that. Still, her polite professionalism, while cold, speaks for her capability as a leader. Courteous to most and firm with her demands, Miyako is a person who was born to take leadership. More than that, she was born into it, and she handles her position with aplomb. After all, when one is the leader of a government organization meant to deal with demonic and alien threats against mankind, one cannot slack off.

While she is good at speaking with others on a professional level, she displays little skill in casual conversation. She is thrown off by informal suffixes, such as Daichi calling her Miyako-chan. Her reaction to this is one of mixed surprised and annoyance. As the leader of JPs, she is unused to people treating her with anything but the utmost of reverence and respect. Daichi's casual attitude has her at a loss, and she is visibly frustrated with not having any background with which to guide her in addressing him about this, other than telling him that she dislikes it. Her lack of friends her own age becomes telling in not only her exchanges with Daichi, but also with others. When Io comes to her, asking for her friendship, she treats it like a contest, telling Io that she expects to learn how to become a perfect friend from her, as Miyako finds that being a friend is more difficult than she thinks. Sadly, Miyako's social skills exist only as far as she needs them to in order to better do her job.

When the party first meets her, she has not only heard of who they were, but also looked into their history and background. She addresses their concerns, and even though she is initially surprised to find that the party has been through a world-ending scenario before, she accepts it. Miyako understands the urgency of the situation, and so she knows that even if she questions things, it is also important to factor in that nothing is impossible. It is better to be prepared, after all, for a situation that may never come to pass, than it is to be caught off guard. And so she decides to not only take them at their word, but to assist the party as well. She secures safety for their family—before the party even asks her to, demonstrating her foresight and her keen ability to plan—and spares valuable resources and personnel to search for the rest of their scattered party, doing what she can to reunite them. For her, this is not a waste. She knows that the party is composed of talented demon tamers, powerful enough to be a valuable help during these chaotic times.

Despite this, she does not allow the party to take on the Triangulum—the invaders seeking to destroy the world—despite their power and experience. It is an oddity to the party, even more so because Miyako seems highly concerned about their wellbeing. She does not want them to get hurt, and while it is easy for anyone to assume that this is because she cares for them, Io points out that Miyako looks at them without really seeing them. She does not evaluate them, does not judge them, nor does she seem proud of them when they accomplish something. She merely sees them as something that's there.

"I simply believe that every human life, all human lives, have equal value."

On one hand, Miyako's behavior and attitude towards the party makes sense. She is someone that sees all life as being equal. Regardless of one's talents, skills, rank, gender, race, etc., all human lives are the same. As such, it does not matter if the party has previous experience, or if they are talented. They can and should be used to help support JPs when needed, but in Miyako's eyes, all people are equally valuable. All lives are equally precious. Why would a person such as she treat the party with more concern than others? That would be going against her beliefs.

And she sticks true to her beliefs, regardless of what others think. Because Miyako believes all lives are equal, she also believes that, "Sometimes you must sacrifice the few to save the many," something that she knows others will judge her harshly for. Yet in her mind, that is the only logical course of action. If all lives are equal, then deciding who gets to be saved is not dependent on who the people are—what becomes most important is the number. If she is offered a choice between saving two hundred people and saving two thousand, she will choose to save the two thousand. In her eyes, while letting two hundred people die is a tragedy, it would not be right to let them live while the majority dies. Miyako is prepared for the criticism and the inevitable burden, but she will not falter from her beliefs because of them. If she must act in a way that is cold and ruthless to do so, then she will. Better to act with cold efficiency and save the greater number of lives than to wallow in indecision and mercy and lose everyone.

Her belief in that all lives are equal apply even to her. If she must die in order to save the many, so be it. She is perfectly willing to sacrifice herself for the world. However, she will not do so blindly, without a plan of action. To save the most lives means to follow the path of greatest efficiency and safety. Both must be ensured in order to guarantee survival.

However, her willingness to sacrifice herself, her belief in that all lives are equal and numbers are the only way to make choices, and her desire for a plan with minimal risk and uncertainty are all traits that gives birth to the darker sides of her entire self.

"This world cannot be saved without sacrifice."

Miyako Hotsuin is a liar.

Not out of open malice or hatred. She lies because she believes it is necessary, because she desires to protect humanity from the truth, and because she believes that she can shoulder the burden of responsibility alone.

From the very moment she and the party met, she has been lying to them. She did look up their background and information, yes, but it was not because she was pleasantly surprised to find skilled demon tamers taking out a threat to the world. She did so because she had prior knowledge of who and what they were, and the purpose they could potentially serve her. Her true plan for the party is to sacrifice them for the world—the thirteen members of the party possess Administrative Authority, something that is required for her plan of saving the world. This is the true reason why she cooperates with the party, and the true reason why she is so willing to allocate resources and personnel in helping them reunite.

Her plan is also why she is so concerned with their well being. Miyako wishes to sacrifice them, but it must be done at the right time and place. She tells them to not battle against the Triangulum because she cannot afford to have them die. She also does not wish for them to defeat the Triangulum, for they are also a vital piece of her plans. Even when the party is close to defeating the Triangulum without her, she will appear at the last minute, stealing both victory and the Triangulum away without explanation as to why. The party is quick to catch on to her inconsistencies, but she continues to lie and evade the truth, thus contributing to her own downfall. Dissatisfied with her lack of answers and increasingly troubling behavior regarding the Triangulum, they find a believed missing party member locked up in a tube in a heavily restricted area. Realizing that Miyako had lied to them about not being able to find him, they decide they can no longer trust her. This becomes even more emphasized when Miyako catches them in the restricted area and sends them to containment cells.

Miyako is selfless, and she truly desires to protect humanity. However, because she also believes that all lives are equal, she has taken the task of protecting humanity on to herself alone. She tells no one of her plans, does not allow for questions, and is firm and unmoving in her position. She can do this with JPs as she is its leader, but when the party starts to question her, she is visibly at a loss, falling into silence more often than not. She does not know how to gain the trust of others because her authority has never been questioned. All of the aspects of her personality work against her when the truth is revealed. She lacks the social grace to cover her mistakes convincingly, she sees nothing wrong with sacrificing a few people in order to save the rest of the world, and her own fatalism comes into the forefront with the party's rebellion. She is incapable of seeing why the others, who do not share her deep rooted belief, would hesitate at sacrificing themselves for the greater good. Her selflessness has manifested in the form of sacrifice.

As for her fatalism, a large part of that is due her selflessness/sacrificial personality, but the other part is a bit more inhuman.

"I am Cor Caroli, yes, but I am also Miyako Hotsuin."

Miyako Hotsuin is also not human. She is a being like the Triangulum, an inhuman invader named Cor Caroli. She has known for some time prior to the events of the game thanks to Al Saiduq, and that revelation shook her to her very core. As she has always been selfless and protective of humanity, she took on the role of leader of JPs and the Hotsuin family with great passion, desiring to see humanity prosper in peace. However, once it is revealed that she was created as a Sword and that she is not entirely human, she begins to doubt herself. What part of her passion was real? What part of her desire, her feelings, her thoughts were because she was human, and what parts of it were programmed into her by her creator? Her doubts begin to consume her, and she becomes lost in them. Unable to see that her doubt stems from and is proof of her humanity, she gives in to fate. She gives in to Canopus, the Divine Order of the Universe, and truly believes that she cannot escape Divine Providence. She cannot escape Canopus's will because she was created by it.

With her awakening as Cor Caroli and the information that came with it, she devised a plan to sacrifice thirteen people (The main party) and herself. She believes herself to be an anomaly, a glitch in the universe that does not exist, and realizes that a half-human, half-Triangulum would not allow for the universe to be at peace. Once again, her personality works against her. All the devotion and drive that she once used to lead JPs she now uses to remain stubbornly faithful to her plan, believing it to be the only way to save humanity. Her passion now leads her to do whatever it takes to see her plan fulfilled, to do whatever is needed to rewrite the world and save it for good.

And if humanity hates her for it, oh well. After all, she isn't particularly fond of herself as well.

"I don't have the right to have friends."

When the party defeats her true form as Cor Caroli, she asks them to kill her. She has, after all, failed in her duties. Her plan will now fail, and she cannot protect humanity as Miyako Hotsuin, the chief of JPs. Cor Caroli was defeated at the hands of humans; she no longer has a right to exist. On the surface, these decisions seem logical, if not rather emotional. Yet dig a little deeper, and it's easy to see that Miyako Hotsuin does not think highly of herself. She tells Daichi, after kidnapping him and containing him, that she does not have the right to be their friend. Every time the party tries to extend a hand of friendship to her, she seems baffled. She cannot comprehend why they would be worried about her.

Adding to her complicated relationship with other human beings is her relationship with Al Saiduq. He was the one who revealed her own inhumanity to her, and although he encouraged her at first, Miyako believes that he betrayed her when he shot down her plan. She feels a sort of kinship with him, as they are both Swords and not human, but that he of all beings could not understand her ideals felt like a stab to the back. It for this reason, along with his power and knowledge, that she keeps him in a tube in a near sleep state. He is her proof that she is meant to be alone and that she must take on her task alone. She does not belong with humans, and as Al Saiduq demonstrated to her, she does not belong with other Swords as well.

In Miyako's mind, her existence as Cor Caroli means that she has betrayed humanity. Her willingness to sacrifice herself, her selflessness, her belief that numbers are all that matters when it comes to human lives... All these things have some sort of root in her disgust at not being entirely human. She is not deserving of humanity's companionship because she is not human. Her heart, her feelings... Miyako knows no way to determine whether they are false or true, and she hates a part of herself deeply because of it.

Despite her leadership and confidence in leading others, Miyako suffers from a pretty bad case of low self-esteem. Not in whether or not she is capable of fulfilling a task, no—she has plenty of confidence there. Rather, her low self-esteem is towards who she is as a person. She can be an excellent tool, but she is not an excellent, or even real, human being.

Adding to her self-esteem concerns is Yamato Hotsuin, the person she was created to replace. As he was off keeping the main protagonist alive in another dimensional pocket, she was created by Canopus to fill in his missing data. As the party continually compares her to him, with Hiro going as far as asking her repeatedly if she is him in drag, she feels bitter towards him and his existence. He is her but fully human. Fully within rights to befriend others and live in this world.

Although she acts courteously towards Yamato at first, going to even call him Brother, she quickly becomes snippy and sarcastic with him. She teases him, tells him to die, and generally has an attitude with him seldom seen with anyone else. Her relationship with him is complex, but in a way, it mirrors her relationship with herself. As she gradually grows to accept her humanity and acknowledge it is there, she becomes more and more emotional. It takes Hiro's gentle coaxing, Io's offer of genuine friendship, and some sharp insults thrown in Yamato's way before she can admit she has a human heart.

Bit by bit, towards the end of game, Miyako begins to understand herself. She begins to see that her frustrations and doubts towards herself, towards her humanity, are proof that she is human. She learns, slowly, to open up to others and believe that her life has more value than just being another sacrifice for the world.

With that said, her wounds are fresh. A tragedy could very easily cause her to backslide to her old ways. While she may not doubt her humanity as much, it's hard to believe that what the others say have merit if they've been proven wrong...

◎ Powers/Abilities:
HOO BOY. As a Triangulum, Cor Caroli has access to some unique passives and abilities. As a human, Miyako Hotsuin has access to a whole bunch of skills. As either, she can summon demons to do her bidding without the use of an outside application.

Miyako Hotsuin
  • Statistically, she's geared towards magic, but is good all around. Second highest stat is strength, and her agility and vitality are equal and hovers around 20 out of 40 at max level.
  • Auto Skill:
Dual Shadow EX - Enables a second, identical attack. Has about a 25% chance of activations, and it is enabled for every member of her team.
  • Active Skills:
Megido - Moderate Almighty/Non-elemental damage to all opponents. Fairly large MP cost, so she can't spam it easily.
Piercing Hit - Moderate physical damage. Cannot be nullified, absorbed, or resisted. Can be reflected/redirected towards her, however, even though it'd be useless most of the time.
Beheadal - HP-dependent physical damage towards all enemies. The higher her HP, the more damage.
  • Passive Skills:
Phys Repel - Repels physical attacks, dealing damage to the attacker while leaving her unharmed. Is unaffected by her own reflected attacks.
Anti-Most - Resistance to most elements, except physical (but Phys Repel covers that)
Phys Amp - Amplifies physical damage by 1.5x
  • Other:
Dragon Stream - Can channel the powers of the Dragon Stream, a source of immense raw energy and power granted to her family. As it is bound to her world and her world is...no longer there, its power is weakened. She has what remains in her, and that's it. With that said, what remains will allow her to bind a single individual completely for a short amount of time, rendering them incapable of movement or use of most skills. She can also shoot like a giant laser out of her sword.
Swordplay - Skilled with a rapier, although she mostly uses it to summon demons and channel the Dragon Stream. She may not be able to hold her own against, say, a master, but she will last against average opponents.
Whip - Insert Devo song lyrics here Skilled with a whip. Highly skilled with a whip. She can cut down demons with a single lash, and use it disable most opponents around her.
Cor Caroli - Can transform into Cor Caroli under extreme duress or with extreme willpower. She will actively try to avoid this as much as possible. Yes, that is her naked human body wrapped around the center.

Cor Caroli
  • Status/Elemental Immunity/Resistance: Immune to most common statuses, illnesses, etc. as Cor Caroli is a star alien thing and not bound by human physiology. Also resistant to most elements. Except Almighty/Holy elementals.
  • Wide Range: Cor Caroli can hit pretty much anything that she sees, and she can do it without moving, making her a terrible foe from afar.
  • Hound Eyes: Enables three actions in one turn. Basically, Cor Caroli is super good at multitasking. If said multitasking involves slapping someone with her giant hands.
  • Asterion: A magnetic field that can interfere, canonically, with the summoning program and damage enemies in its field. It's never really clear what it truly does, since Al Saiduq soaks up all the hits and it's game over if he dies.
  • Asterion's Barrier: ...Actually, we have no clue, since Al Saiduq negates it. One would assume it has something to do with continued interference with the program, thus nerfing the abilities of the party. Both this skill and Asterion will be played out like electro-magnetic interference, but only on a low level or with mod permission to do something else.

◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
  • Her whip: Standard whip infused with some magical energy so she can effectively cut down demons and other supernatural entities with it.
  • Rapier: A slim, elegant rapier. More suited for ceremony than battle, although it is kept in top condition and more than strong and balanced enough to stab someone, should she require it.
  • Demons: Zouchouten and Sandalphon
  • Her cellphone, a JPs standard yellow flip phone.

The world had ended.

The world had ended, her friends were dead, her data got reassembled through some means other than the Astrolabe, and now she was in some sort of strange virtual reality world, being asked to...dance? To jump around and hit buttons with her arms and feet in time with music? What was the purpose of such a meaningless task? Did they think her a fool, to be so easily distracted by flashy lights and some prancing about?

Nonsense. She had been granted a second chance at life, and she intended to make the most of it. If CERES truly could restore their world, then she would cooperate to see it through. No matter the state of her world, she was still Miyako Hotsuin, protector of humanity. That much, at least, had remained the same.

Yet for all her determination and desire to move forward, she could do nothing to escape the room that she was locked in. The room was circular, the walls smooth and free of blemishes, and other than the exceedingly bright and noisy stage in the center, there was nothing else of notice. She reached for her whip, her rapier, anything, but they weren't there. Whoever had forcibly uploaded her into this place had not uploaded her weapons with her.

The only option, then, was to dance.

Miyako grit her teeth. Dancing was not an activity she had to ever partake in, and even if she had to learn a dance, she would have preferred something more elegant. Waltz. Ballet. Tango, even, would have been better than whatever dance the hologram was performing, with its arms and legs flailing about and looking more like someone in the midst of tripping than any sort of coordinated routine.

As she watched the hologram, fists clenched and jaw tight with tension, the music slowed, stopped, and the hologram bowed before flickering out of existence. There was a clash of cymbals that Miyako was unprepared for, and then immediately after that, the stage dimmed.

"Tutorial end," the speakers boomed. "Rank B needed to progress. Contestant, take the stage in five...four..."

They truly did expect her to dance, to recreate the frantic thrashing the hologram performed. Was that the ticket to leaving? Embarrassing herself in front of God-knows-who in order to score a high enough rank to move on?

Fine.

As the countdown continued, Miyako Hotsuin walked up to the stage, standing in the center with glowing buttons and projections shimmering in the space around her. The countdown hit zero, and the stage brightened. The music began to play, loud and strong, the rhythm of the bass permeating through to her bones.

This was no dance, but rather a battle. Her fight to restore her world would now begin. The music's introduction ended, and the speaker shouted the beginning of her trial.

"DANCE!"
